A Collective Mindset vs. an Individual Mindset

A collective mindset vs. an individual mindset is closely tied to how we learn to operate either as part of a team or independently. In many cases, that foundation is shaped early. A parent or guardian may pick up on early signs that help guide the decision as to whether a child would benefit more from group activities or individual pursuits. The choices made about the activities children engage in often influence how that mindset develops over time.

As a child, I was involved in team sports like football and basketball. Those experiences taught me far more than how to play the game. They showed me how to show up for others, communicate effectively, and contribute to something greater than myself. Being part of a team shaped my understanding of accountability, trust, and shared success.

While an early foundation is valuable, it’s never too late to develop strong collaborative skills. Those skills can be cultivated through community involvement, faith-based organizations, mentorship, and professional networks. Teamwork isn’t limited to where you start. It’s something you can continue to learn, strengthen, and apply at any stage of life.

My mother was intentional. She understood that guiding me into those environments would help me grow, not just as an athlete, but as a person. She wasn’t just raising an individual; she was developing a teammate. And that distinction matters. If we think back to the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, it forced many of us to reflect on what we were missing. It highlighted the value of being around others, engaging in meaningful conversations, and learning through shared experiences. It reminded us that connection is not optional; it’s powerful.

Success is never achieved in isolation; it requires partnership, coordination, and a willingness to work across organizations, communities, and stakeholders. To truly elevate any organization, you must embrace the power of “we” over “me.”

How we show up is a direct reflection of our foundational mindset, and we carry that into every room, shaping the impact we make. It also creates a moment of pause for leaders: how well do you know your team? Are you taking the time to understand who they are so you can help them strengthen their areas of opportunity while also elevating their natural strengths? Great leadership isn’t just about delivering results; it’s about developing people in a way that honors who they are while helping them grow into who they’re capable of becoming.

With a collective spirit, we position ourselves to all win TOGETHER!
